No Ordinary Man::
Pope John Paul II was laid to rest last Friday, April 8 at the grotto beneath St. Peter's Basilica. A large of people were present at the mass before the funeral itself and they were expressing how much they wanted the Pope to be made saint immediately. Leaders from different walks of faith and from different countries were also there to commemmorate the Pope's life and legacy. It's remarkable how these men and women who have different even contradicting beliefs and ideals with Pope come together in his honor. Aside from those who were shouting and celebrating, there were those who were crying and still mourning over John Paul's death.
Anyhow, the Eucharist was celebrated by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. I was listening to the Gospel and it's just appropriate for the Pope's life. The main theme of the Word of God was to Follow Christ, and I think that was what Pope John Paul II strived for during his time here. I fell asleep just before the Communion and I wasn't able to witness the different leaders make the sign of peace. Our parish priest said during his Sunday homily that President Bush shook hands with President Talabani of Iraq. The Syrian and Israel leaders also shook hands, which was unprecendented I think. It was a good thing I woke up just before the Pope's coffin was brought inside St. Peter's. That's the last time we're ever going to see the Pope's body in a sense. *sigh* Hmm... After dinner, I tuned in to CNN to watch more of the Pope's funeral. They showed this piece about the Vatican's official photographer and his relationship with the Pope. Ha. I cried when they showed picture of the Pope's deteriorating health. I cried more when the photographer mentioned that just a few hours before the Pope died, he was called to his bed and the Pope said, Thank you Arturo. Thank you. :) So, I will sort of retire temporarily from writing stuff about the Pope. Will resume when the Conclave of Cardinals commences next week. :)
Viva Il Papa!
